When SecretShare fits
SecretShare fits an occasional password or small-file handoff where neither party should create an account. It encrypts content in the browser and keeps the decryption key in the URL fragment. The recipient must confirm before the server atomically consumes the record, which helps prevent link previews from using the only retrieval.
Its simplicity also means fewer administrative controls. There is no sender history, recipient email verification, organization policy, or recovery workflow. The 150 MB file ceiling is far below Bitwarden Send's limit.
When Bitwarden Send fits
Bitwarden Send is stronger for people and organizations already operating in the Bitwarden ecosystem. Official documentation describes end-to-end encryption, managed lifespan options, a maximum access count, password protection, email-verified access for specific recipients, and much larger file support.
Creation and management are tied to a Bitwarden account, and file Sends require eligible storage. That overhead may be worthwhile when a sender needs an inventory of active Sends or policy-driven controls.
Do not use either tool for repeat application access
Temporary links solve delivery, not ongoing secret distribution to workloads. Use a managed secrets service, workload identity, or a team password manager when recipients require repeat access, offboarding controls, audit events, or automated rotation.
